Resident Population
At the end of 2023, the province’s resident population was 85.26 million, an increase of 110,000 or 0.1% over the end of 2022.
Among the resident population, 43.22 million were men and 42.04 million women; 11.57 million people aged 0-14, 57.96 million people aged 15-64, and 15.73 million people aged 65 and above.
2023 witnessed an annual birth rate of 4.8‰, population mortality rate of 7.6‰ and natural population growth rate of -2.7‰. Steady progress was made in new urbanization. By the end of the year, the urbanization rate of the permanent population reached 75%, an increase of 0.6 percentage point from the end of the previous year.
Administrative Division
As of the end of 2023, Jiangsu was home to 13 prefecture-level cities, 95 counties (19 counties, 21 county-level cities, 55 districts), 718 towns and townships (17 townships and 701 towns), and 519 subdistricts. Kunshan, Taixing and Shuyang were pilot county-level cities and county under direct provincial administration.
