Recently, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the China Geological Survey jointly released the Catalog of Innovative and Applicable Technologies for Ecological Restoration (Third Batch), with a total of 35 technologies selected. The “Cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) Control Technology for Muddy Coastlines” from the Jiangsu Provincial Geological Bureau successfully made the list. Recommended by Jiangsu Provincial Forestry Bureau, this technology was jointly developed through collaborative research by the Marine Geological Survey under the Provincial Geological Bureau and the Academy of Forestry under the Provincial Forestry Bureau. It will provide strong support for ecological restoration undertakings during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
The “Cordgrass Control Technology for Muddy Coastlines” is based on the actual situation of cordgrass control in Jiangsu Province. Addressing prominent issues such as wide tidal flats with gentle slopes along Jiangsu’s coast, widespread distribution of cordgrass, and high control costs, it adopts two major innovative control technologies: “plowing and ridge-building” and “well-type water level reduction”. This breakthrough overcomes the bottleneck of the traditional “mowing + flooding” model, which suffers from long cycles and difficulties in ensuring sufficient water depth for large-scale operations, thus significantly improving control effectiveness. A relevant official from the Provincial Geological Bureau stated that the successful selection and promotion of this technology not only provides an economically efficient and ecologically friendly technical pathway for controlling cordgrass along Jiangsu’s coast, but also establishes a usable typical model for the prevention and control of invasive plants and ecological restoration in similar muddy coastlines nationwide and even globally.
