The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development recently jointly released a public notice of results for the 2026 selection of cities eligible for fiscal support from the Central Government to carry out urban renewal initiatives. A total of 15 cities are on the list. Wuxi has been selected as the third city from Jiangsu eligible for the program, following Nanjing and Suzhou.
The Central fiscal funds will provide lump-sum assistance to the selected cities. According to this year’s application requirements, the funding will mainly go into two domains: the construction of key model areas and mechanism building. The fiscal support will also cover four areas, including improving the quality of urban infrastructure, developing complete communities and upgrading supporting facilities for residential areas, redeveloping and revitalizing old urban districts such as historic and cultural blocks, and addressing outstanding issues related to people’s livelihood by leveraging existing resources and developing consumer-oriented facilities.
In recent years, pivoting on a people-centered urban development philosophy, Wuxi has scored phased progress in improving urban functions, livability, and development capacity by carrying out urban renewal with systematic and precise measures. This year, seizing the opportunity presented by the national policy, Wuxi has successfully secured a place on the 2026 list of selected cities. Through a rigorous process, including application, provincial and national expert reviews and on-site defense, Wuxi has stood out amid the intense inter-city competition. This national accreditation will inject strong momentum into the city’s ongoing renewal efforts.
