Jiangsu Successfully Achieves Geothermal Power Generation for the First Time
updated on:2026-01-07 08:05

The Demonstration Project for Efficient Comprehensive Utilization of Clean Geothermal Energy in Key Areas of Jiangsu Province, located in Xiaoyangkou, Rudong, has recently made critical progress: it successfully achieved geothermal power generation for the first time. This milestone marks the entry of the province’s deep geothermal resource development into the “Electric Era”.

The project was jointly implemented by the Jiangsu Geological Survey Institute, the Rudong County Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning, and Jiangsu Yangtong Development & Investment Co., Ltd. Relying on the high-quality geothermal resources of the “Yangshen Well No. 1” drilling project, the technical team successfully conducted geothermal power generation tests, with single-well power output exceeding 200 kW.

“Yangshen Well No. 1” has a measured wellhead water temperature of 108°C and a daily water output exceeding 5,360 cubic meters, making it a rare, high-quality geothermal resource along China’s eastern coast. Zou Pengfei, Deputy Director of the Institute of Basic Geology at the Jiangsu Geological Survey Institute, explained that the technical team developed a “high-efficiency conversion + green protection” technology system based on the specific conditions of the well. “The success of this power generation test represents a critical step in advancing the ‘cascaded utilization of geothermal energy’ for this demonstration project. It not only fills the gap in geothermal power generation in our province but also lays a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of a comprehensive utilization demonstration project integrating geothermal power generation, agricultural drying, building heating/cooling, modern facility agriculture, and tail water reinjection.”

“The continuous and stable operation of this test fully validates the adaptability of this technical route under Jiangsu’s specific geological resource conditions, achieving a leap from ‘theoretical design’ to ‘engineering verification,’” said Du Jianguo, Director of the Institute of Basic Geology at the Jiangsu Geological Survey Institute.
