The implementation of urban renewal actions is a key task of the Deep Reform Commission of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee this year, and is also one of the top ten major tasks and 100 important objectives of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government. Reporters recently learned from the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-rural Development that the list of the first batch of provincial pilot projects for urban renewal has been released, and 48 projects in 11 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu have been selected. Among them, 12 projects will be implemented in Nanjing, with the highest number of pilot projects, 10 in Suzhou, seven in Wuxi, four each in Changzhou, Yancheng and Yangzhou, two each in Xuzhou and Huai’an, and one each in Nantong, Lianyungang and Taizhou. These projects will be implemented first to try to accumulate experience and form a number of new methods and paths for urban renewal practices that can be used and promoted in other cities.

The Guiding Opinions on Implementing Urban Renewal Actions issued in April has determined the key tasks of “seven projects” such as the elimination of hidden safety hazards in existing buildings. According to the relevant person in charge of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-rural Development, the selection of pilot projects will include the type of projects that are friendly for all ages in line with the requirements of elderly and child care services. The “eight projects” are involved in the 48 pilot projects. Among them, the projects mainly focus on improving the livability of old residential areas, enhancing the vitality of inefficient industrial land, preserving and inheriting history and culture, and restoring urban ecological space.

Jiangsu will promote the implementation of pilot projects and deliver real high-quality results as soon as possible. We should aim to achieve quality results in these pilot projects, promote the integration of planning, designing, construction and operation, and implement the “designer responsibility” system. At the same time, we will encourage public participation and mobilize market investment, so as to make urban renewal projects a vivid practice of social governance based on collaboration, participation, and common gains.
