Xuzhou City Wins UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor

On Oct.1,good news came from the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi of Kenya that Xuzhou has scooped the  2018 UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) Scroll of Honor and stood out as the only city winner out of the 58 applications worldwide this year.

Launched in 1989, the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor is known as the most prestigious human settlements award in the world. Xuzhou managed to top the domestic review in August this year and get recommended by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development for applying for the award. Relevant personnel in the judge panel of the UN-Habitat held that the city has scored outstanding progress in ecological restoration in recent years which has remarkably improved the living environment for residents, hence the honor.

Xuzhou has carried out a series of projects targeted at industrial restructuring, energy structure adjustment and ecological renewal with serious energy devoted to managing coal subsidence, deserted mining areas and quarry holes. Across-the-board efforts have been made to enhance ecological development and steps accelerated to prevent and control air pollution. The ecological environment of the city thus has witnessed prominent improvement. Forest coverage has reached 30.1%, coming out top in the province; green coverage rate in the built-up area arrives at 43.81%, ranking second in Jiangsu. Xuzhou has successfully transitioned from a city filled with coal ashes and dust to one featuring lucid water and lush mountains, for which the city has won accolades including the National Ecological Garden City Award, National Environmental Protection Model City Award, China Habitat Environment Prize and National Civilized City Award.
